Ah - I had thought it was the International Society for Third-Sector Research (or so I seem to recall:) So what is it I'm supposed to google? Native non-xwindows - whatever that means?

Gimp is very good on windows or Linux but runs via the xterm windowing system on osx and is therefore a bit clunkier and fiddlier to use than a native app. It is very good though once you put some effort into getting past that non-native difference and you will get 90-odd percent of Photoshop's power for free.
